Finding Natural Treatment for Depression

Over the years, we’ve been able to learn more about mental health and how people are affected on a daily basis. For many decades, there was a stigma attached to those suffering from the likes of depression which led to the universal ‘cure’ of ‘just smile, things will get better’. With the addition of technology and various scans, we know that mental illness is a very serious problem and one that doesn’t just go away after some time with family and friends.

As a mental health disorder, depression can change a life by affecting our eating and sleeping habits while also impacting one’s confidence. As opposed to a passing mood or a form of weakness, depression can affect anybody and it needs to be dealt with effectively in order to feel better and gain overall health once again.

With a depressive disorder, it not only impacts on the mind and thoughts but also the body. For this reason, it isn't just something we can ‘snap’ out of; in terms of treatments, many people receive help for a number of months or even years.

In just a moment, we’re going to look into the different types of depression but we first want to note how depression can strike at any time. Often, Christmas and the holidays, for example, are seen as a joyous time but it can also be a time of depression and loneliness. With the sun disappearing earlier in the day and the cold weather forcing us indoors, winter is a time where we need to look after our minds and this is something we have learned as a chiropractor in Fort Lauderdale.

The staff was very friendly and professional.  Most importantly,  all of the different therapy and adjustment procedures are second to none! Enjoyed every second I was here. Will schedule many more!

Types of Depression

When it comes to depressive disorders, there are several forms but they normally come under three different categories.

Major Depression - With major depression, the sufferer shows a number of symptoms that soon affect one’s ability to eat, sleep, concentrate at work or school, and have fun with things that were previously enjoyable. While some will experience a single episode of depression, most experience regular episodes.

Bipolar Disorder - Sometimes called manic depression, bipolar disorder is much less common than the other two forms but often more confusing and harder to diagnose. For sufferers, they have regular mood swings from highs of mania to the lows of depression; the time spent at each stage could be prolonged or the swing could occur rapidly. When feeling depressed, many of the same symptoms of major depression are on show while the manic stage leads to hyperactivity and excess energy.

Although some will say the mania stages are positive, there are several problems with it including the clouded judgement and social behavior. Often, the increased energy levels can cause embarrassing situations. On the surface, it can sometimes seem like the sufferer has resolved their problem by thinking up a new career move or making a romantic gesture. However, mania can lead to the point where one loses touch with reality and this causes problems of its own.

Dysthymia - Finally, we have dysthymia which is where the symptoms are less severe but the effects last for a longer period of time. Typically, people with this health concern lead perfectly normal lives but go through each day feeling a little down. During this time, they may also experience major depressive episodes but less frequently than the other two types we’ve seen.

Symptoms of Depression and Mania

As chiropractors in Fort Lauderdale, we’ve seen depression and mania extensively over the years and there’s a definite trend as far as symptoms go. However, it’s also a very unique disorder which means that 100 different people could all have a different set of symptoms. Most commonly, they experience a combination of the following;

Depression - Restlessness, feelings of guilt, sadness, feelings of being lost, worthlessness, hopelessness, pessimism, lack of energy, no interest in previously enjoyable activities and hobbies, insomnia, lack of concentration (even on important tasks), fatigue, feeling that everything is in slow-motion, thoughts of suicide or death in any way, poor decision-making, loss of appetite (or overeating and weight gain), headaches, irritability, and anxiety.

Mania - Not feeling tired until the early hours, racing thoughts, lack of judgement, improvement in energy levels, increased sexual desire, grandiose ideas, excessive elation, increased talking speed, poor social behavior, and behavior that doesn’t match character.

Using B.E.S.T for Treatment

Today, we want to discuss the use of B.E.S.T (Bio Energetic Synchronization Technique) when dealing with depression. As a non-forceful solution, the technique is used to create overall balance within the body and mind. By acknowledging ‘interference’ and the role it plays in our conscious mind, we can deal with the imbalances it causes within the autonomic nervous system to prevent the exhaustion of our organs.

Face Down B.E.S.T - Also known as physical B.E.S.T, the idea of this first solution is to concentrate on the surface of the body; by applying light pressure in important places, we can address the sympathetic and parasympathetic imbalances. When we experience a pinched nerve, muscle spasm, or chiropractic subluxation, the imbalance will create a loss of function not just in the one area but right across the body.

With the face down technique, the patterns of stress can be updated leading to a resolution in chronic and acute pain. By using a leg balance check, the doctor will palpate the spine as well as holding pressure points while you’re in the face down position; these pressure points include the sacrum, spine, and skull. Once the pattern has been restored and the muscles balanced, the spasm, pressure, and subluxation should disappear. For many patients that visit our chiropractor in Fort Lauderdale, they experience relief almost immediately because the body has the opportunity to heal itself. By balancing the energy within our bodies and clearing the interference, we can enjoy this approach which is completely painless and free from medication.

Face Up B.E.S.T - On the other hand, we can also offer face up B.E.S.T which is where advanced technology is used to update the brain interference. Over time, certain negative emotions become the norm and this includes guilt, worry, judgement, fear, and many others. As this memory pattern exists and gets stronger, our overall wellness is interrupted. As a result, our healing capability is limited.

With emotional B.E.S.T, we can first learn the emotional pattern before then removing the interference and allowing the body to move forward and react to current situations as opposed to what may have happened in the past.

If you’re looking for a chiropractor in Fort Lauderdale, Dr Barak Meraz at Carpe Diem Chiropractic is a great place to start. With the right qualifications and experience in the industry, we can help with the B.E.S.T technique and therefore alleviate the symptoms of depression. By working with you, the aim is to get your body and mind in a position where it can heal itself based on what you’re experiencing and this is important.
